Nobody really knows why dogs eat grass but there are numerous theories, including:
- dogs like the texture of the grass
- dogs like the sweetness of the fructose in spring grass
- dogs feel nauseous and use the texture of the grass to make themselves sick
- dogs are maintaining a well-balanced diet with vegetation like every good omnivore should.
While many dogs love eating grass, you need to be mindful of chemicals (eg fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides) used on grass that may cause health problems.
If your dog is eating more grass than usual, best to organise a vet check. Grass can be irritant to the stomach lining, so it is a good idea to try to prevent your dog from eating grass.
